Eco-Garden
Gimnazia Vič is fortunate to have some areas of land around our school building. While some of this is used for sporting activities, the decision was made to transform one part into an eco-garden for the school.
The purpose of the project is to create a holistic approach to education and learning in nature, as well as a learning environment that comprehensively and effectively addresses the challenges of climate change.
The project seeks to build an environmental culture within the education system, promote learning for the green transition and environmental sustainability, foster a more positive attitude toward nature, and reduce the ecological footprint of our educational institution.
Another goal is to support education for sustainable development (ESD) by encouraging innovative and creative didactic approaches and activities that develop sustainability competencies necessary for the transition to a climate-neutral society.
Students are involved in almost every element of work in the eco-garden project. This includes planting and tending to what we grow within the area, monitoring the local ecosystem, harvesting fruit and vegetables to be used in our school canteen, and much more besides. While some of these activities are done within the regular timetable, it is also established as one of the after-school activities available to our students.
The successes of the project have been clear from the start with students appreciating the different style of learning opportunities available while also being able to share and enjoy the produce from our school garden.
